Founded by Janus Friis and Niklas Zennström, Skype had more than 660 million worldwide users in 2012. Skype is an Internet company headquartered in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, that specializes in Internet voice and instant messaging applications. Skype was created by Skype Technologies in 2003. Skype also has a feature called SkypeOut, which allows users to call phone numbers around the world at low rates.

The Skype system can also be used to make landline and mobile telephone calls, and to send SMS messages. Skype has met with controversy over its security features, skirting local laws banning cryptography or for end-user license agreements requiring disclosure of the exact software code. It uses proprietary peer-to-peer (P2P) technology to manage most of its calls. Skype lets users communicate with peers by voice, video, and instant messaging.
